Denosumab new breast cancer drug in phase 3 of study

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Denosumab Demonstrates Superiority Over Zometa(R) In Pivotal Phase 3 Head-to-Head Trial In Breast Cancer Patients With Bone Metastases.
“We are extremely pleased with the outcome of this important study, which shows that denosumab can reduce or delay the serious complications of bone metastases in breast cancer patients better than the current standard of care, and with a favorable benefit/risk profile,” said Roger M. Perlmutter, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president of Research and Development at Amgen. “These results underscore the importance of the RANK Ligand pathway in bone disease, and offer the promise of improved care for patients with advanced breast cancer. We look forward to reviewing the results from a second Phase 3 study of denosumab effects in advanced cancer patients later this year.”

What is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy, or “chemical treatment,” has been around since the days of the ancient Greeks. However, chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer began in the 1940s with the use of nitrogen mustard. Since then, in the attempt to discover what is effective in chemotherapy, many new drugs have been developed and tried.

Sometimes referred to simply as “chemo”, chemotherapy is used most often to describe drugs that kill cancer cells directly. These are sometimes referred to as “anti-cancer” drugs or “antineoplastics.” Other chemo drugs such as biologic response modifiers, hormone therapy, and monoclonal antibodies, which work in different ways to treat cancer, are included in this web-site. Today’s therapy uses more than 100 drugs to treat cancer. There are even more chemo drugs still under development and investigation.

Love/Avon Army of Women fight Breast Cancer

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and the Avon Foundation for Women, a global leader in breast cancer research, joined forces to launch the Love/Avon Army of Women.

Our revolutionary initiative has two key goals:

* To recruit one million healthy women of every age and ethnicity, including breast cancer survivors and women at high-risk for the disease, to partner with breast cancer researchers and directly participate in the research that will eradicate breast cancer once and for all.
* To challenge the scientific community to expand its current focus to include breast cancer prevention research conducted on healthy women.

Join us in this movement that will take us beyond a cure by creating new opportunities to study what causes breast cancer—and how to prevent it.
